SciLor's MaLotF is a plugin for the popular instant messanger Pidgin, that automatically dumps new messages, a new message indictator and the last signed on buddies to files in the .purple dir (LastMessages.txt, NewMessage.txt, LastLogons.txt)
For Windows just copy the "exporter.dll" into the plugin directory of Pidgin.
For Linux you will have to compile it yourself.
Do not forget to activate the plugin in Pidgin's Plugin section!
If you don't know where the .purple directory is look here: "c:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.purple\" for Win7 or "c:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\.purple\"
