If you are annoyed by AntiVir's (http://www.avira.com/) Update Notifier you can block it very easily if you own WinXP Pro(It also works on Vista and Windows 7):

The notifier is just a file that can be blocked from starting.

Just goto Start - Run and type

and press return.

Now you goto "Software Restriction Policies"(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457006.aspx). If you never worked with that before you we'll need to activate that. Just make a right click and "create restriction policy".

Now goto additional rules, make right click in there to create a new "Pathrule"

Goto your AntiVir Path and search for the "avnotify.exe" (ex. "C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe")

Now select "not allowed" from the dropdown, press ok and you are ready.
