Conclusion
Bill Gates (1981) and Steve Jobs (1978) started they operation system career with a
text based DOS OS. Apple had released his first DOS three years before Microsoft did.
Also Jobs tried the first step into a graphic based user interface (GUI) with “System 1”
in 1984. It had an intuitive user interface so first time users had no problems with it.
Microsoft’s Windows was developed during that time and Bill Gates wanted to create
a similar user experience and pushed the release date more than one year. Because of
that many developers stopped developing for it. In 1985 Steve Jobs gave up Apple to
create NeXT. So Apple lost his front man with his innovative ideas. Apple had success
with his next operation systems System 2 (1985) and System 3 (1986). In 1987
Microsoft made the first attempt overtaking Apple: Windows 2.0 bundled with Excel
(Excel previously only existed for Mac [Apple]). The next operation systems of Apple
which were popular for its innovative products had none anymore and so Microsoft
had a chance to have a big success with their next OS: And they had it with Windows
3.0 in 1990. In 1992 Windows 3.1 had even a bigger success. Apple tried to get with
Mac OS 7 to the pole position again. Also Microsoft’s Windows 95 had big success later
on in 1995. Apple was nearly ruined. Apple opened the market for third party
manufactures of Macintosh (Computers) clones. In 1997 Apple last attempt was to buy
NeXT and get Steve Jobs back who created the innovative operation system NeXTStep.
They hoped that Steve Jobs could bring Apple back into profit zone. To stop the
Macintosh market they renamed the Mac OS 7.7 early to Mac OS 8 (To make the
contracts to the third party Macintosh manufactures invalid). So Mac OS was an Apple
exclusive product again. In 1998 Windows 1998 was released which was just a better
Windows 95. Apple started to combine Mac OS with the newly gained NeXTStep.
Therefore Mac OS 9 (1999) included many libraries of the upcoming Mac OS X 10 (The
fusion of Mac OS and NeXT Step) to open the developing market for it very early.
Microsoft’s ME was released but didn’t combine the DOS free Windows NT and the
Windows 9x series. Instead of that Windows 2000 was created for professional use
only. Later on in 2001 Windows XP was released to take place of the normal user’s DOS
free operation system. In the same time Mac OS X 10 was released and convinced with
the intuitive features and the “Aqua” GUI. Till today Mac OS X got updated but
