libraries of the upcoming OS X included to allow developers to develop programs that
are compatible with OS 9 and OS X.
Mac OS X 10.x (2001-)
Mac OS X 10 has three different APIs (“Application Programming Interface”) unlike to
the previous Mac OS versions and Windows. The “Classic” API allowed old Mac OS
programs to run in Mac OS X. The second API with the name “Carbon” was a fusion
between the old “Classic” API and the new Cocoa API that allowed porting old Mac OS
software easily to Mac OS X and make use of new features of the new operation
system. The last API “Cocoa” is the new API of Mac OS X and allows using the complete
power of the native objective-c (Brought by NeXTStep) programming language and
brings the Aqua. Also “Cocoa” is accessible through other languages like “AppleScirpt”,
“Python” and “Ruby”. The “Quarz” display interface supported WYSIWYG (Like
NeXTStep). OS X has a completely new designed graphical user interface named
“Aqua”. It makes use of much 3D on different controls of the window and allowed
transparency. Many things are hold in blue. It also supported the graphic interface
“OpenGL” that allows playing complex 3D games on the Mac. Other things like the idea
of the “Dock” in NeXTStep were also taken into Mac OS X which collects the current
running and often used programs. Till today Mac OS X 10 has been updated with
“Puma”
(10.1),
“Jaguar”
(10.2),
“Panther” (10.3),
“Tiger” (10.4) and
“Leopard” (10.5)
to increase the
usability of OS X
with new features
and fewer bugs.
