NeXTStep [not Apple] (1989)
The graphic performance of NeXTStep was very high because it allowed dragging
windows with displayed content (Other operation systems only showed the frame of
the windows during dragging).
NeXTStep’s
display interfaced
used
“Display
Postscript”
(Postscript is used for printing) to
reduce the differences between a
virtual document its printed
companion (WYSIWYG: What You
See Is What You Get). The first
graphical web browser named
“WorldWideWeb” was developed
on the NeXT OS and was the basis for later developed web browsers. Program
windows were completely separated from its menus like in Mac OS today. NeXTStep
supported “Drag and Drop” through the whole system which is a standard in operation
systems in our time. Also new for this time was the “Dock” that places often used
programs at the right side of the monitor.
Mac OS System 7.x (1991-1997)
Mac OS System 7.0 enabled
real 32bit addressing for
more possible RAM instead
of the old “24 + 8” system
which was needed for the
old Macs with limited
memory. The user interface
got overworked and due to
the new Mac models it got
more
colourful.
