System 3.x (1986/1987)
In System 3.0 the Finder was faster due to the newly introduced “Disk Cache” that
stores often used data in a part of the memory. Also the new Hierarchical File System
(HFS) was new that allowed folders in folders. Because System 3.1 had many bugs
which mostly fixed with System 3.2. Also “Microsoft Works” a text editor was
introduced for Macintosh.
System 4.x/5.x (1987)
The System 4.0 fixed bugs left from the 3.x versions. You needed 512k (0.5MB) of RAM
(Random Access Memory which is a fast read and write memory) and so the Mac 128k
was not able to run it. The next System 4.1 excluded the Mac 512k because now 1MB
of RAM was needed. It offered a new Finder
that was able to handle high capacity drives
(Drives larger than 32MB).
In version 4.2 of the Mac OS System the
Finder was able to show the RAM usage like
the task manager of Windows today. The
Finder now displays a progress bar and a
cancel button while copying. Also the Control
Panel was updated and got tabs for different
options. It supported the new colour Macintosh models.
System 5.0 added the MultiFinder a program to switch between running programs and
made multitasking possible. People who disliked the MultiFinder were able to disable
it and could stick at one application at time.
