Apple/NeXT operation systems
Apple DOS 3.x (1978-1983)
Apple DOS 3.1 was an 8bit
operation system and the first
release of DOS by Apple even its
version number was 3.1. This
version had only 4 file types (“I”
Integer BASIC, “A” Applesoft, “B”
binary file, “T” text file) which made the whole OS very limited. Apple DOS 3.2 had
included many games and demo programs such as the “COLOR DEMO” or “SPACE
WAR”. Because DOS 3.x had only support for
the programming language BASIC it was
difficult to make use of other programming
languages. Another big problem with Apple
DOS 3.x was that each byte read from a disk
was copied three times around in memory until
the data was usable.
Also DOS 3.x was device dependent and only worked with the Disk II drive and had no
support for a hard- or a RAM disk (Random Access Memory is the fast temporary
memory of a computer till today).
Apple ProDOS (1984)
With Apple ProDOS had faster disk access due to the resolved disk access bug (Copying
files into memory three times). It introduced a standardized protocol for hardware
devices that allowed reading, writing, deleting and status calls. Also new was the
support for a hardware clock that allowed creating time stamped files.
System 1.0/1.1 (1984)
Mac OS was easy and simple to use especially for people who tried it for the first time.
It had more a less revolutionary user interface compared to the previous ProDOS
(Completely text based interface). Compared to the first version of “Microsoft
