Windows XP (2001)
Windows XP had been sold 17 million times in the first two month. It combined the
professional Windows NT series with Windows 9x series for end-users. MS-DOS was
completely removed. Windows XP had a new user interface with the name “Luna” and
is very different to the user interface of older windows versions. It is more colourful
and user-friendly. It included many programs out of the box for example the Windows
Movie Maker a simple tool to cut and create videos or slideshows with music.
Completely new was the remote desktop that allowed to remote control another
computer with XP installed. Also Windows XP was much more stable than the previous
versions of Windows. It had also included automatic updates and a firewall. With the
Service Packs which came later on it checked for an anti-virus program and notified the
user if none is installed.
In 2002 Microsoft introduced two special versions of XP: A “Media Center Edition” for
living room usage with a special program for radio and TV and the “Tablet PC Edition”
for tablet computers with write recognition. Later these versions got updated to
improve their usability.
Till today XP got three service packs to fix bugs or add missing features.
