Also new was the “Safe Mode”. This runs Windows without many functions to start
even if some drivers are defect. Also it looked much more 3D then Windows 3.1.
Windows 95B/C (1996/1997)
These versions of Windows 95 introduced the
graphical interface “DirectX” and the “Internet
Explorer”. Also with this version it was possible
to use USB-Devices and AGP-Graphic-Cards. But
this was only for testing purpose. With the new
file system “FAT32” it was possible to part a
hard-disk into partitions (More or less break a
hard-disk into sub hard-disks) which were
allowed to be bigger than 2 gigabytes (FAT16
only allowed less than 2GB).
Windows 98/98SE (1998/1999)
Windows 98 had not many enhancements to Windows 95 It was more stable, more
comfortable, had better support for USB and “Plug&Play” hardware and the possibility
to use multiple monitors. Windows 98SE was more or less an updated Windows 98: It
got new versions of the graphic interface DirectX, the Internet Explorer and the
Windows Media Player.
Windows Millennium Edition [ME] (2000)
Windows ME has been developed because the Windows NT (Windows without DOS, a
professional-user product) and Windows 9x (95, 98) were not joined in Windows 2000.
Windows 2000 only got a Windows NT for professional use. So Windows ME an OS
with included DOS was produced. In previous Windows versions it was possible to
switch to the old DOS mode but in ME it was only possible to open a DOS command
window. So it was more or less hidden to the user. It got some new functions like a
feature that recovers missing or damaged systems files and an enhanced help.
