Introduction
Today much software makes the work with the computer very easy. Many things are
done automatically without someone notices or even knows it. For example you put
your USB-stick into the computer, the computer installs drivers in background and you
can easily copy and delete your files on the stick. Or you surf through the web, write
emails, chat with friends, hear music, watch films and play games which look more and
more like reality. Everything combined with a user friendly graphical interface. But if
you go back to the year 1981 you had to start programs with text input without a
mouse. Everybody in that time dreamed of having a computer with more than 100MHz
CPU, 20MB hard disk and 1MB RAM. Today 1GHz (1000MHz) CPU, 100GB (100,000MB)
hard disk and 1GB (1,000MB) RAM are the lower standard. The more computer power
exists the more possibilities the software developers have. But how the main core of
the computer the operation system (OS) has developed with the time and the gained
computer power? Apple and Microsoft are two companies which are more than 25
years old and are developing operation systems till today. Both brought forward the
computer world with their excellent operation systems “Windows” and “Mac OS”.
Both started around 30 years ago with a text based user interface. How both
developed till today? What are the differences between their old operation systems
and their operation systems today? And what are the differences between Microsoft’s
and Apple’s operation systems?
